Line vs Load: What These Wires Mean (and How to Tell Them Apart)

Line is the wire that brings power in from your breaker panel. Load is the wire that carries power out to everything downstream. Here’s why your GFCI cares so much — and how to tell the two apart without guessing.

What Do “Line” and “Load” Mean?

Every “line vs load” question comes down to one idea: power in versus power out.

LINE Power in — the supply side

It comes from the breaker panel — or the last device before this box — and it’s hot whenever the breaker is on.

LOAD Power out — the downstream side

It leaves the box and feeds whatever comes next: more outlets, a light, an appliance. It only has power because the line side passes it along.

On a standard outlet this hardly matters — the terminals are interchangeable. On a GFCI, smart switch, or timer it matters a lot: reverse the cables and the device won’t work, won’t protect you, or both.

Where It Matters Most

Line vs Load on a GFCI Outlet

Flip a new GFCI over and you’ll find two pairs of terminals: one stamped LINE, one stamped LOAD. From the factory, the load pair is covered with yellow tape — a built-in warning to leave them alone unless you mean it.

For the cable bringing power from the panel. Black (hot) wire on the brass LINE screw, white (neutral) on the silver LINE screw. Every GFCI installation uses the line side.

Optional. Add a second cable here only to extend GFCI protection to outlets farther down the circuit. Nothing downstream? Leave the factory tape on and the screws empty.

What happens if you reverse line and load?

  • A modern GFCI won’t reset. Press RESET and it stays dead or pops right back out — newer GFCIs are built to lock out when miswired.

  • An older GFCI may look fine — and protect nothing. The face can stay live with no ground-fault protection at all.

  • Downstream outlets lose protection. Any bathroom, garage, or outdoor outlet fed from the load side is only protected when the wiring is correct.

The 10-second check: press TEST. The outlet — and everything on its load side — should go dead instantly; RESET should bring it back. If TEST doesn’t kill the power, the GFCI is miswired or has failed.

How to Find the Line Cable — Safely

When a box has two cables and you don’t know which is which, here’s the safe way to sort them out. One rule outranks everything: breaker off, wires proven dead with a tester, before you touch them.

You’ll need a non-contact voltage tester (about $20 at the hardware store) and some tape for marking.

  1. Kill the breaker.Turn off the breaker for that circuit and confirm the outlet is dead with the tester. Check the tester on a known-live outlet first.

  2. Open the box.Unscrew the device and pull it out gently. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything — future you will thank you.

  3. Separate the wires.Disconnect them and spread them apart so no bare copper touches anything — not the box, not each other, not you.

  4. Power on, test, tag.Flip the breaker back on briefly. Hold the tester near each black wire without touching it. The one that lights it up is the line cable — mark it with tape.

  5. Power off, verify, connect.Breaker off again. Prove the wires are dead one more time, then connect: line cable to the LINE terminals, load cable to LOAD.

During step 4, those wire ends are live. Keep the tester near the insulation — never touch bare copper — and keep your free hand away from the box. (While the wires are still connected, every cable reads hot — that’s why you separate them first.)

More than two cables in the box?

Three or more cables means the box also feeds other parts of the house — or holds a switch loop or a shared-neutral circuit. If more than one cable tests hot, or none does, stop. That’s where a homeowner project becomes an electrician’s diagnosis.

Beyond Outlets

Line and Load at Switches, Water Heaters, and Disconnects

The same in/out idea follows the wiring through the whole house.

  • Wall switches. Line is the feed from the panel; load runs up to the light. A plain toggle works either way — but smart switches and timers have marked terminals and misbehave if you swap them.

  • Water heater and A/C disconnects. The gray box beside the unit has lugs marked LINE (from the breaker) and LOAD (to the appliance). Feed the correct side.

  • Fused disconnects. Reverse line and load here and the fuses can stay energized even with the pull-out removed — a dangerous surprise for the next person who opens it.

Know When to Stop

When to Put the Cover Back On and Call a Pro

Swapping one clearly wired GFCI is a reasonable homeowner job in most Texas cities. These are the signs it isn’t one anymore:

  • Aluminum wiring. Dull silver strands instead of copper, common in 1960s–70s homes. It needs special connectors — copper-only devices on aluminum wire are a fire risk.

  • No ground wire. Two-wire cable with no bare ground. Code-legal fixes exist — a GFCI is actually one — but let a pro confirm which applies to your box.

  • Scorched or brittle insulation. Browned, melted, or crumbling wire jackets, or a burnt smell — overheating has already happened. Find out why first.

  • Double-taps. Two wires pinched under one screw or one breaker terminal. A common source of loose, overheating connections.

  • Anything inside the panel. Behind the panel cover, the service lugs stay live even with the main breaker off. Leave panel repairs and panel replacements to a licensed electrician.

A note on Texas rules: anyone doing electrical work for hire in Texas must hold a TDLR electrician’s license. Homeowners can do some work on their own homes, but most North Texas cities require a permit and inspection past a like-for-like swap. Are “line” and “hot” the same thing?

Not exactly. Line and load describe whole cables by direction — power in versus power out. Hot and neutral describe individual wires: both the line and load cables contain a hot (black) wire and a neutral (white) wire.

What happens if I wire a GFCI backwards?

Most modern GFCIs simply won’t reset — the outlet stays dead until line and load are corrected. Older units may deliver power with no protection at all. The fix: breaker off, verify dead, move each cable to its proper terminals.

Do I have to connect anything to the load terminals?

No. The load side is optional. If the GFCI is the only outlet you’re protecting, connect the line cable, leave the factory tape over the load screws, and you’re done.
